You can gain a lot of satisfaction if you  build your own greenhouse.  Many different designs and plans are available and you will also gain the freedom to grow in any season or climate and to grow in comfort while you work.

5. Home greenhouses today are often covered with a poly material.  Some have found surplus tempered glass from salvaged storm doors.  Depending on the size of the greenhouse it may be difficult to find enough.  The materials chosen also affect the type of frame you need.

7.  Many accessories can be added to a greenhouse.  The good thing is this can be done over time which will keep your cash outlay down at the beginning.  Automatic watering systems, heating systems, ventilatiion are all things to consider.

8.  Learn what the “good bugs” are.  The inscets that are beneficail to your garden.  Insects like the Praying Mantis and many kinds of spiders can be a welcome addition to your greenhouse and will help you avoid needing insecticides.

9.  Be sure to plan for storage of your supplies and the things to help you maximize your greenhouse experience.

How long will it take to build a greenhouse, can you build a greenhouse in one day?  You might build a small greenhouse in a day but chances are you will spend at least several weekends.  A major problem in greenhouse construction is that most people fail to do enough planning and talking to others who have built greenhouses.  They often underestimate the time and expense of building.  Good  green house plans can help you avoid this because you will find reliable bills of materials and time estimates.

You can build your own greenhouse and with a little extra effort save a bundle.  A greenhouse will help you in all aspects of your gardening.  You can prepare plants for an outside garden while it is still cold and so they will be of a good size when the planting season begins.  Your family will benefit too from the variety of fresh foods you can provide all through the year.

When you plan a greenhouse you should select a style that blends well with the design of your home and your garden layout. Your climate is important to consider too. If you live in an area with heavy snows then a flat or straight roof would not work very well. You need a roof that allows the snow to slide off easily.

1. Free-standing with curved or peaked roof: the rectangular or square shape allows maximum space for plants.

2. Lean-to or Wall attatched greenhouse designs are useful when there is limited space in the backyard. These designs allow for easy hook up of water and power sources from the house.

Greenhouse designs are also avilable in any size including small solariums, medium and large greenhouses – you can even find prefabricated greenhouse kits.

Styles of greenhouse designs:

1. Gable Greenhouse – where roofing with several gables are the primary feature. This design is often built on to the end of an existing greenhouse or attached to the end of a garage or existing structure..

2. Barn Style Greenhouse – It looks like a barn and typically has shorter walls with a wide roof and interior. It has appeal in a country setting but can make a beautiful freestanding addition to any garden.

3. Dome Greenhouse – This is a freestanding design with no sidewalls. The dome sweeps down to the ground. These recently have been made with PVC frames and plastic but prevously had been expensive to build. Maintenance can be high on these because of the need to replace the cover. When made with PVC and a plastic cover this might also be called a Hoop Greenhouse.

4. Gothic Style Greenhouse – if you have a Gothic Style Home then this might be a good choice for you. The snow slides easily off this design because the roof and walls make a continuous form allowing the snow to slide off.

Building a greenhouse plans are available on line and are something you should take advantage of.  Building a greenhouse can be easy with the right plan and the right planning.

Most modern greenhouses are made from aluminium because it is weatherproof and light. Galvanized steel might also be used. If you go with wood, be sure it is pressure treated and a weather resistant wood like redwood or cedar.

As you think about your greenhouse design, look for a structure with high strength and stability. Look for ablity to stand weather extremes like high winds and snow build up.

The greenhouse should have the strength to support grow lights, sidewall shelves and hanging baskets. Plan for hinged storm doors and large side or roof vents. You might want to consider a door that can double as a ramp when your design has an elevated floor. This allows you to get heavy items easily in.

Consider your budget and plan accordingly. Remember if your budget is small you can always design so additions can be made later and in the mean time enjoy the benifits of greenhouse gardening.
